Major school refurbishment underway at Robert Smyth Academy

WW Brown & Sons’ builders are heading back to school for one of their latest projects. It’s a major refurbishment of the school’s music department and assembly hall.  The building is the largest music / conference venue in Market Harborough.

The project has involved replacing windows (the old ones were notorious in the school for being drafty) as well as adding wooden cladding to the top section of the building. The revamp is not only going to cut the school’s energy bills by improving insulation, it will also greatly enhance its appearance.  The section of the school currently being worked on dates back to the 1970s –  with a metal frame and panelling construction that was typical of the period, it was starting to look dated and in need of a refresh.

The work that WW Brown is involved in not only gives a cosmetic lift to the school, it has also assisted in unifying the different elements of the school’s buildings that have been built at different times and using different styles.

The assembly hall itself is the subject of even bigger plans.  The school has long recognised the importance of the building in hosting not only student activity, but also parental visits.

It is the area that is most seen by parents and members of the public who attend many of the schools musical events, such as Jazz band and Soul band

It is also the site of open days and visits from parents considering sending their children to the school

The longer term plan is for a complete internal refurbishment as well as a separate entrance hall and bar area. The work that WW Brown has been involved in so far is part 1 of a 3 phase plan. Mark Brown stated:

Most of the team at WW Brown attended the school so it has been great to be back on site.  In fact, we have been involved in many projects based at Robert Smyth Academy over the years. I suppose we must be doing something right if they keep asking us back to work on more
