Are you falling into the trap of these energy myths?
Saving energy is at the top of everyone’s agenda, whether that be down to eco-consciousness or wanting to save a bit of money. However, whilst there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you cut your energy bill, there are also plenty of energy myths out there.
Here we discuss some of the energy saving myths surrounding heating your home…
You should leave the hot water heater on all the time, rather than turning it on and off.
We hear this quite often, but the reality is that you don’t need to be constantly heating your water. If your tank has an insulating jacket it should keep water hot all day, reducing the need for reheating, but you should use a timer to ensure your water comes on for an hour or so before it is needed (such as before a shower). Be aware that modern washing machines, dishwashers, and electric showers all use cold water and heat it themselves, so you won’t need a constant supply of hot water.
You should leave the heating on all day, rather than turning it on and off.
If you leave the heating on all day, you are simply paying to waste energy – even if you turn the thermostat down your boiler will continue to work, costing you money. A good idea is to programme your central heating to come on as you wake off, and switch off when you are out of the house or in bed.
The thermostat helps to heat the house faster
Turning up the thermostat will not warm your house faster. Your boiler works at a constant speed, and will reach 20°C at the same time whether you set the thermostat to 20°C or 30°C. The best advice is to set your thermostat to room temperature (between 18 and 21°C) and leave it at this.
Turning radiators down will save money
This one is true, but only if you also turn down your thermostat down as well. As before, if you only turn your radiators down, your boiler will continue to run until it reaches your set temperature – this will take longer if your radiators are turned down.
Never turn your radiators off completely, as this can lead to damp and mould. Turn them to low and keep the doors closed to ensure no energy is wasted.
