Save money with our preventative plumbing tips
Whilst here at WW Brown we’re happy to come out whatever your plumbing problem, it’s often best to practice ‘preventative plumbing’ rather than calling out the professionals for ‘reactive plumbing’ – for example, calling the plumber because of a burst pipe.
Preventative plumbing is a much better investment in the long term than reactive plumbing – so here are WW Brown & Sons top tips for looking after your plumbing, whilst increasing energy efficiency at the same time.
- Keep an eye on your kitchen sink. This is the area in which most problems occur, as many people are unaware that they should not pour grease, cooking oil, or fat down the drain. This is because these materials harden over time, causing clogging, and eventually preventing any water moving easily through the pipes.
- Test out your toilet tanks. Often you cannot tell that a toilet is leaking until it is too late, but by dropping a couple of drops of food colouring into the tank and seeing if any shows in the bowl, you will know that a ball or flapper mechanism needs replacing.
- Get your drains cleared. Have a plumber come out around once a year to inspect your main drain line and pipes, as they will identify and clear blocked drains before any problems become serious.
- Adjust the water heater. If you find that when taking a shower your water is too hot or cold, or that you run out of hot water too quickly, it can be a sign that your water heater needs adjusting. A plumber can check to see if there are any further issues.
